Methodology

How we check

Every row in the grid is labelled with the method behind it. If a method can't prove an answer, we say so — we never render a guess as a fact.

Domains: registry data

Authoritative RDAP lookups for .com, .io, .ai and .co, with a DNS fallback. A 404 at the registry means genuinely available, not a guess.

GitHub & Bluesky: official APIs

Public, documented APIs with reliable available/taken answers. The most trustworthy social signals in the grid.

Reddit & Product Hunt: profile probes

Public profile checks. Occasionally rate-limited. When that happens, we say so instead of inventing an answer.

X & Instagram: honestly uncertain

These networks actively block automated checks, so we mark them “couldn’t check” and link you through to verify manually. We never claim a name is free unless the method proves it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the startup name checker work?

You enter one candidate name. We check domain availability across .com, .io, .ai and .co using authoritative RDAP registry data (with a DNS fallback), and we probe X, GitHub, Product Hunt, Bluesky, Reddit and Instagram for a matching handle. Every row is labelled with the method we used, and results are cached for 24 hours.

Is this a domain name checker or a username checker?

Both, on purpose. Most tools make you check domain availability in one place and social media username availability somewhere else. A launch-ready name needs both, so we run the domain name check and the username check together and show one combined view for the exact same string.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account and no cost. Live checks are limited to a fair-use rate per hour, and any name that has been checked recently returns instantly from cache at no cost.

Why do some results say “couldn’t check”?

Some networks, including X and Instagram, block automated availability checks or serve the same page for every handle. Rather than guess and risk telling you a taken name is free, we mark those as “couldn’t check” and give you a one-click link to verify manually. Honest uncertainty beats a confident wrong answer.

Can a name be available on domains but taken on socials?

Very often, yes. That is exactly why checking them together matters. A clean .com means little if the X and GitHub handles are gone. Seeing the whole picture at once helps you pick a name you can actually own across the surfaces that matter at launch.

How current are the results?

Domain results reflect live registry data at check time. Social results are a best-effort probe at check time. Availability changes constantly, so we cache for only 24 hours and always link the source so you can confirm before you buy or register.
