Are online directories still relevant?

Online directories are still relevant — but only the ones that solve what search engines and AI got worse at: trustworthy comparison. General web search now surfaces SEO-optimized listicles and ads before substance, and AI answers hallucinate features and prices. A directory earns its place by offering what neither does: structured, current, verifiable facts about many products in one view.

The directories that stopped being relevant are the link farms — pay-for-placement pages that existed to sell badges and backlinks. Users learned to skip them, and search engines learned to discount them.

So the honest test for any directory in 2026: can you tell where its information comes from, and can vendors buy their way up the rankings? If the answers are 'yes' and 'no' respectively, it's the useful kind.
